“Brighton has always had a strong vibrant underground music and art scene. There are loads of bands, projects, artists, venues and labels but I'm only gonna mention the alternative music scene...

Amongst its most famous exports are what remains of the ashes of Theatre of Hate (London originals but now resident in Brighton) - Spear of Destiny.

Also a Brighton resident is Chelsea's frontman Gene October and he told me they're getting together for a couple of gigs here in town and also the coming Rebellion festival in the summer with the "Evacuate" album line-up. That will be a blast!

Also still doing the rounds are probably the city's most famous Punk band Peter & The Test Tube Babies.

As for that great band Poison Girls - they're sadly missed but obviously not forgotten...

Now for the newest generation of rebels with a cause…

Burnt Cross and Constant State of Terror which fly high the anarcho-punk flag and in the case of the latter a slight crustie influence can be noted in their sound as opposed to the Crass and affiliates type of sound that Burnt Cross diffuse through the several means of communication...

Also we have Dollar Sent that owes its credentials to a more garage/punk genre but are a must to see live...

Now as for The Meow-Meows, ska is the dish being served. Bon-Apetite!

Speaking of Ska but with lashings of hardcore/punk infused in its sound The Junk have been slowly but surely gaining ground along with a faithful fan-base.

Now also of the Punk persuasion but with a comic and funny outtake on life are Los Mendozas, Always dressed as Mexican wrestlers in their gigs, they're a band that you gotta see them to believe it and the sound damn it rips!

For those that like a bit more melody then maybe Corrigan would be the answer.

For the trasher that hides inside you one can always rely on Crypsis to deliver...

For the new hardcore legions of nouveau kiddies then it'll have to be The Fallthrough. These guys don't mess about!

Finally Random Heroes are also worth mentioning...

There are loads more bands about but I think I've given you all the right pointers as if you go to see or hear one of these then you probably hear about others sometime too...

As for venues places like The Hydrant, Prince Albert, Cowley Club and for the bigger gigs the Concorde 2 are the usual rendez-vous.

For the place to buy records, cd's and t-shirts, I have to mention Buz and his store the Punker Bunker as he is also one of the people that organizes events in town and has over the years delighted many folk bringing to town such great acts as The Adicts, the Dickies, NoMeansNo, etc...”

“Frankly I was appalled at the first report that you had for the Oxnard area. At the moment we have TONS more bands than 5 groups who all play the same generic (not a huge fan of myself) 2-stepping HXC. Don't get me wrong, the dudes who play in those bands are all cool. I went to school with some of them. It's just not the only bands that are, and at that time, were active.

The Oxnard scene has always been thriving. Every clique of people seem to have their own opinion about the vitality of the scene.

The "street punks" scene tends to come alive once every ten years. Same with the "pogo" and "drunk" punks.

The "HXC" kids scene usually makes a revival every two years or so when bands like Ceremony or Trash Talk decide to come down to Oxnard to visit.

A list of genres and bands are below. Separating active bands, styles/genres/ and area of origin.

All bands listed represent a whole spectrum of punk and hardcore. Not just one style. Tons of styles with people of all types.

The scene itself supports the emergence of new bands and releases. My friend and I have created a promotional group Black Diamonds Promo.

Where possible we bring the hardcore teams from other nations and, although there were only 2 concerts with foreign teams, we're not going to dwell on this and it will develop.

Hard Stance, the group in which I play, has grown pretty well this year. We were able to travel to Russia and around Belarus.

"Punk 4 the Homeless started in Jan 2010 aiming to present quality punk rock, raise money for homeless charities and introduce youngsters to the scene. Much like Gillman Street it is all ages, unlike Gillman Street it is in a Church. It is hoped it will be a respectful family friendly environment (where Charlie Harper could bring his grandkids).Traditionally punk and church haven't got on. Yet both are minorities who believe in openess, cooperation, equality, are anti racist sexist etc and care about all sentinent beings.

Possibilities are endless, especially with Alternative Tenticles signing Knights of the New Crusade and Lars Fredrickson calling Johnny Cash the first punk.The promoter for these events has been part of the punk scene for over 30 years (old git)... Proceeds from each gig goes to Casa Alianza/street children."

"We read the news about punks being apprehended and detained in the Aceh region of Indonesia recently, and like many of you, were extremely disturbed at the thought of the police sweeping these kids off the street, shaving their hair, and forcing them into some sort of bullshit military training to deprogram them. We are privileged to live in a society where we are free to express ourselves as we wish, and while the US and other Western states have their fair share of police injustice, this incident is a harsh reminder to how good we really have it. That is why we are starting a small initiative in solidarity with our friends overseas, to let them know that we stand behind them and fully support them.

The mixtape is a crucial part of our subculture, and is solely responsible for the spread of punk influence worldwide. Mixtapes have introduced myself and many others to so many amazing bands, and the act of making them is one of the most sincere forms of friendship that exist in our world. So, we are asking our friends, our community, and anyone else who remotely gives a shit to make and donate one mixtape cassette to the kids in Aceh who were forced into detention solely for being punk. It’s a small gesture, but it means a lot to people who need our support. The content entirely of their choosing as long as it’s somewhat falling in the punk/hardcore/crust genre. If you have an awesome tape you never listen to anymore, or would like to make a new one specifically for this endeavor, that would absolutely rule. We are collecting these tapes to send out in early January, so your deadline to submit is December 30th, 2011. We know that the post office is fucked right now with holiday shipping, but right after xmas it frees up largely, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Please try and pack as much music onto these tapes as possible, and try to avoid sending a short 10-min long demo cassette. This is an out-of pocket initiative for me (Rob) personally, and I’d like to make what we send as substantial as possible. And include your address in the tape, you might just make an international buddy out of the process!

Not only is it the longest running European outdoor underground festival, but it is also an established name across the world. The festival offers a stage to an international variety of underground groups, without the help of major budgets or sponsors. "I’m not really up with the latest news from the South Wales scene because I've only been to one show in the last few months but I am instead left looking for clues about what exactly is going on. It has gone very quiet lately because Le Pub does not have the regular stream of quality gigs that marked the CCHC heights of the last 5 years. Now that it is left to other promoters and a fire safety limit of 100 tickets has been set we must now only look forward to more expensive shows if touring bands are going to stop by. Trial played recently but I don’t like buying £10 on-line tickets 3 months in advance – it just ain’t punk is it?

So instead the focus has shifted to Cardiff and Undertone and Clwb Ifor Bach are two venues that host affordable hc shows fairly regularly. In fact there is a show coming up that may be an indication of where the South Wales scene is headed next…here’s the promo:

Natural Order
First show for this international super group, featuring ex-members of Night And The City, Ironclad, Ark Of The Covenant, Deal With It, More Than Life, Wraith and Dignity Dies First playing tightly crafted down-tuned metallic hardcore.

The Keep
First show anywhere for more than 3 years. Album finally recorded, and hopefully nearing release by the time of this show. A few songs from it will be drip fed on the internet leading up to this show to wet some whistles.

Crossbreaker
Keeping the god-hating flame burning into the new decade, these nasty sounding youngsters aren't to be taken lightly.

Taking their musical cues from the likes of Fugazi, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead, Mission Of Burma and Sonic Youth, Saturday’s Kids are nothing if not currently unique in our fair land. They specialise in tense, interwoven guitar soundscapes that build until the post-rock ends and all you’re left with is pure, unfettered hardcore punk, all the while little flourishes of melodic guitar add texture.

Facel Vega
Sounding like a DC band straight out of the revolution summer era of 85", Facel Vega play with an emotional intensity that is hard to match. Anyone who enjoys Rites of Spring will love Facel Vega. This may also be the first show you can get your hand on their debut LP "The Body" which is coming out on Art For Blind.

Harbour
Fast, fast and even faster hardcore. Harbour are experts in making intellectually aggressive hardcore, they will make you mosh and think at the same time. Their debut 7 " Gwalia Deserta on Carry The Weight records is one of the best hardcore 7"'s of recent years. For fans of Dag Nasty, Government Issue and Articles of Faith.

Crossbreaker are receiving the most exposure after the release of the Lows EP (Holy Roar and Thirty Days of Night Records) with mainstream mentions in magazines Kerrang and Front. 2012 will probably bring a European tour and greater interest from the US. Their popularity means the area is becoming associated with a more sludgy dark style combined with Brutality Will Prevail who have had a track Heavy Eyes on the Holy Hell Summer Sampler '11.

“Sometimes I don’t know what is happening to the hc/punk scene in my area :) It's a little bit complicated... it's not like it used to be in the past!

There are nowadays 2 types of promoters - the one that does whatever it can to bring you a band only for the money! It’s not done for the genre or the love of the music, it’s done as a business! You can see this when a hardcore punk band has shitty support bands where they play shitty fashion deathcore. It's a shame for me but business is business!

The other type of promoter is the type who brings anonymous bands and sadly no one knows these names...so it's normal that the live show will not be a success. I think we are a little bit confused about our music education on hardcore punk nowadays! It's not the pure scene it used to be back in the day! I think it is just a fashion and it is very sad for me.

We have bands in Greece that deserve a lot of respect… these bands I believe are the ones that will make a big explosion in our music scene!

Fausto Coppi - a mixture of crust punk and grindcore with some hc influences. Believe me when I say they sound amazing.

Astrid Lindgren - a new band from Poznań. Melodic hc/punk with emotional attitude. They just released a split CD with W Kilku Słowach.

Cymeon X - hc outfit formed in 1991. One of the first polish straight edge bands. They recently reunited and released a new LP.

One Kind Word - a youth crew band with female vocalist. They name Youth of Today, Chain of Strength, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge, Insted, Cro-Mags, Bad Brains and Minor Threat as their influences. They released a demo tape which is available for free download.

Apatia (ex-H.C.P.) - formed in 1989. One of the longest active polish hc bands. Their songs consist of thought-provoking lyrics and members support activism, veganism, vegetarianism and straight edge. They disbanded in 2011. Stiepan (bass) went back to recently reunited Cymenon X, Jędrek (guitar) plays in Epileptic Walk.

Next Victim - sludge/crust punk with female vocalist. They released a split LP with From the Depths (USA) not long ago.

Word Is Mine - a hardcore/metal act. They are currently recording tracks for their EP/LP. Demo to download for free.

All Wheel Drive - a melodic hardcore outfit. They released a demo and LP. Krzychu (drums) also used to play in Apatia.

S.F.U. - released some live and demo tapes. Fast, crazy, dynamic hardcore between old school and new.

M.U.K. - played funny punkrock, released some live stuff and a demo.

Arschloch - crazy old school HC in vein of early Black Flag and stuff. Old and dead!

Polska Malca - cult Slovenian band - almost no singing, but crazy music in general. Especially drums!!! Unique!!!

“Me and a couple of friends have just started a booking label here in Gothenburg. The main reason for doing so is because we want to be more involved in the hc/punk-scene in Gothenburg and Sweden. We already have Göteborg Straight Edge that put on a lot of good shows. But we still feel that we wanna be a part of this as well, and that way we can put on shows with some of our own favorite hc/punkbands.

In the beginning we'll probably just use one venue. And we're mainly looking to book hardcore and punk bands. We're all big fans of british hardcore, so we'll probably try to book a few bands from the UK. It's fairly easy to put on shows I think. If everything goes according to plan, we'll be putting on our first show in February!

I think it'll take some time before people know who we are. But if we put on good shows, and makes sure everybody is having a great time, I think people will be more supportive! We will probably do some shows with just local bands, so that they have somewhere to play. Because I think it's important to support your scene. But we'll also try to book bigger bands of course. And maybe put local bands as support!

Two of the bands that represent Gothenburg the best in my eyes are Anchor and Stay Hungry. Great bands both of 'em. And if you haven't heard 'em yet, make sure you do!

I play in Leaving Shore, a newly started post-hc/hcband. We've just recorded our first EP which will be released in mid-January."

I've started a new thread to celebrate the hardcore/punk classic - the sampler. hcmorethanmusic does not promote individual group releases but I get the feeling that samplers are mainly produced to spread the word about new groups and to offer support to bands that need it most. They are usually compiled by people with a deep passion for our music and there is hardly ever a sense of self-interest when they are released. It is all about the music and the DIY ethic that sets our music apart from most other genres.

"Monteparadiso is a collective running an autonomous cultural center in Pula, Croatia.

Monteparadiso was born in 1992 in a squatted fort in Pula, Croatia. We were mostly into punk/hardcore concerts and similar things. From then on we have a punk/hc fest every summer which gathers people from all over Europe. In 1997 we registered an NGO and in 1999 we moved to an abandoned barracks where we got 100 m2, but then squatted additional 400m2. There we have few rehersal rooms for bands, recording studio, presentation room, concert place, kitchen, hacklab (based only on GNU/Linux) with free internet access, diy cinema, sleeping space, etc.

"Germany has a lot to offer when it comes to hardcore. Maybe it is too much at one point. Almost each city and town has a youth club/ center and can put on shows if they want to. Hardcore became a well-diversified scene over the years. You’ll find every kind of genre in Germany. Be it youth crew, mosh, hardcore punk, or what ever. We’ve got it all!!

Basically everything has a root where the voluminous tree grew up and the buds blossomed forth. Growing Movement was one of the pioneers in the German hardcore scene. They were around from 1989 to the early nineties. They are on stage again and play almost at every festival with raw power and energy.

Punishable Act is also a band that has been present for more than 20 years by now. They are from Berlin and have their roots in the mid 80’s, but finally renamed the band to P.A. in 1993.

Up from the Baltic Sea is a band called The Crushing Caspars for more than 20 years now. They’ve got the talent to mix Rock’n’Roll and Hardcore in their own unique way.

Isolated is a very well-know band from Quedlinburg and has shared the stage numerous times with bands like Sick Of It All and Agnostic Front. Keep it oldschool is the device!

Another solid component of German hardcore was the band Ryker's in the 90's. Their sound was heavy and lyrically highly critical about the so-called scene that was coming up.

New generations arose from the ashes of the predecessors. Black Friday 29 hit the stages around Germany.

Fight For Fun was a great band that played thrashcore from Zhukovsky. They have two demos and one of them they released on a diskette).

The Zhukovsky scene formed mainly thanks to these guys from FxFxF.

Anton had his own label and distro - Fast ’n’ Easy - but now it is in the past. Vova plays guitar in Rasplata and also records different bands from the scene.

We also have a girls trio called Beer Babies.

If we have a look at the Moscow scene, we’ll see that many new bands have appeared and many have released new records.

REKA (post-metal) released their 3rd album this year and they have a new vocalist Sebastien from France.

Members of REKA also played in screamo band Optimus Prime. They had their last show this summer and REKA played at the Fluff Fest this year.

I can also single out The Occult. This band is similar to Converge. They have a 4-song EP.

"I Adapt have stopped now. They went on strong from maybe 2000 until around 2010. But while active they were probably the most active hardcore band in Iceland and one of very, very few that went abroad to play shows. The individual members of the band also did other things, for example, Þórir, made a quite succesful alternative career as My Summer as a Salvation Soldier, which was a low key musical project with some beautiful songs.

The hardcore scene in Iceland has always been, in my opinion, a part of a bigger scene which is just the heavy music scene in Iceland. The thing is, we are so few that it would be ridiculous to take up the same attitude as in the US. and other countries where hardcore kids and metal kids are enemies and can't stand each other. Here in Iceland I always felt there was a huge welcoming to each and everyone and that there was never just a hardcore show or a metal show. Often you would go to a show and the line-up would include I Adapt along with a death metal band, a progressive rock band and something else. I always liked that because I also like it all.

Heavy music shows in Iceland never had too many guests. But always a good crowd though. A band plays and then those same people become the audience. Beautiful."

The metal scene in Latvia is much bigger. Such bands as Skyforger, SIA Radikal, Sanctimony, Relicseed, Huskvarn are popular among all alternative people.

Also there are no straight edge bands (I'm a straight edge myself and it just pisses me off). It's due to the fact that the youth in Latvia are getting shit-face drunk and are not interested in moral values. They're too busy following all the trends. Now they're hipsters. Two years ago they were emos. A couple of years before that they were into hip-hop.

I think the hardcore and punk scene didn't catch on since it began in the early 80's. In that period of time Latvia was a part of USSR where you couldn't listen to the music you wanted and people just couldn't get the latest information about music trends.

It's different with metal. Early metal (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) were popular in the world at the time. And people who got permission to travel (leave USSR) knew that those were the bands whose records you needed to take home. So it caught on. Just think about it. You can take home only one record from your trip. Which one will you choose? A band who you might have heard of, or a band you haven't...?”

"I'm from Caracas, in general the hc punk scene here is dying, unfortunately most of the people live for fashion here, but there's a small group of people who make their biggest effort. Our country has a really bad economy so almost all the bands have a diy attitude, but as always the guys with the money are the guys with the contacts, and they're the ones who can pay studio hours and all that.

There are no labels that support local hardcore, it's all independent, and for the venues well it's almost the same. You have to know somebody or be friends with the venue owner to be allowed to play. Here we struggle to make and listen to the music we love, but no one said that this was easy. It's in the effort where you see the results.

Here check The Zeta, they're an example, I work with them. They recorded their album themselves and the videos too."

“I'm from Bogotá, Colombia. I’ve been involved with the hardcore scene for about 4 years now and this is what I've noticed:

Hc/punk in Bogotá have passed by some common process that I think that are the representation of every scene in every corner of the world. There are different scenes and each one of them is very different and usually doesn't have any contact with others.

There is a "NYHC" based scene which I think is the most prolific due to the cultural conditions. This is one of the oldest movements in the whole country despite the separation of their main groups. Some bands that come into my mind to refer this movement could be:

This movement is also related to Beatdown and DMS styles and also has a big influence from Hip Hop culture. I think it's mostly apolitical but recently I've heard that some right wing people are involved in this scene, and also some have neo-nazi tendencies.

One of the scenes I know less is the christian one. Many people linked with this movement have religious beliefs and the music is the way they express their message. A common prejudice is that most of the members are scene-kids or related to that trend. The music is mostly Metalcore/Deathcore but also it's possible to find hc/punk. Some bands I can remember are:

There's another group of people that are very politicized. It calls itself the Hardcore punk scene. The sounds in their bands are based around the Dbeat, Anarchopunk, Powerviolence, Grindcore and crust sounds. Their shows are completely DIY and it has plenty of fanzines running inside. It's also the scene with most labels I know (although recently it seems that no one is active). Some bands I remember are:

The cultural foundations are in anarchopunk ethics. It's mainly anarchist, pro-vegetarianism, pro-homosexual, etc.

There is some scenes that have their influences on the 90's and 00's bands. Several members are Straight Edge and it's foundations are also DIY. The musical influence is mostly bands like: Have heart, Casey Jones, Verse and similar. A lot of people linked with this scene are vegetarian, drug free, god free and some are highly political.

One of the most important labels in this scene is Step Down Records whose principal bands are:

Also there are plenty of bands that keep away of the scenes and try hard not to be linked with them.

I think one band that could represent my own personal scene could be Sangre & Fe. I think it's message and the way they do the things is great, and also their music that has big influences on skatepunk mixed with some slugdy passages.

Another band I can highly recommend is Steps, they are incredibly good and, as far as I know, there's no similar band in the world. They both are part of a recent Label called Towers of Acre.

Another important label is Immigrant Records.

There are not many zines, most of them are about political collectives but there's a guy called xLacoloniax that recently talks about the scene with some poetical touches.

Some of the favorites venues are: Teatro La Mama, Teatro Acto latino, Teatro metro. There are not specific places to place hcpunk, most of them have nothing to do with hardcore, they just rent the space. Also there are not many promotors, every band has to do their things by themselves.”

“In Le Mans, there are no places to play and almost no real indie activity, cause of the local authorities which are really tight and which survey everything / everyone associated with "the alternative" and fight everything that’s out of the state's culture.

In Tours, that's different. There's been a big punk hardcore / Oi culture for more than 20 years. So even if that's about a permanent struggle with authorities, there are always many people to make the indie scene alive in the DIY spirit and way!

Many bands (of different kinds of hxc punk music) are active and go on tour a lot! It’s a cool independent place for practising, sharing moments, ideas for music, plans for shows, repairing music stuff etc., and places to play!

"The Hardcore scene in the city of lights isn't as big as you'd think, and it's plagued by two major issues.

First of all, the nightlife around Paris is dying. Lots of venues in the suburbs are shutting down for economical reasons, while some others in Paris have to turn into nightclubs for a couple of days every single week to stay afloat. That applies to the smaller venues like Le Batofar and to the biggest ones like Le Bataclan. L'Elysée Montmartre closed its doors a couple of months ago after it was burnt to ashes following an electrical incident.

Secondly, Most shows around here are booked by DIY promoters: the only actual booking agencies around here aren't really into Hardcore or Punk as a whole. As a result, it's getting harder to see well-established HC/Punk bands in Paris because of this lack of available venues and serious promoters: our town often gets skipped.

On the bright side, the kids who do contact bands and set up shows are doing a great job. Every now and then we manage to see great bands in the tiniest venues I have ever seen. A couple of days ago, Trial and Anchor played in a bar with support from Birds in Row. A few weeks before that, we got to see Birds in Row open for Loma Prieta in a cafe's basement. The sound was awful, the heat was unbearable, but the feeling of intimacy... I can't find the right words to describe it.

I never really bought into the idea that Hardcore is a family, but the one thing I do like about our scene is that you always see familiar faces. Lots of people who pay 5€ tickets to see a modern hardcore band will attend a Screamo show the next week, pay another ticket to see a local band after that... After a while, you're pretty much forced to meet people and actually talk to them, which is something that doesn't happen in bigger scenes.

Now, let's talk about the music itself. There is absolutely no hype around parisian bands that aren't playing Metalcore or Beatdown Hardcore, but that doesn't mean there aren't a couple of acts worth checking out.

...Namedropping isn't really what I'm going for, but each and every one of these bands sound completely different and it'd take way too long to describe them all.

I live twenty minutes away from Paris, in the suburbs, like most kids who attend shows, so we usually are on the same train home, haha!

I don't know much about zines and I'd say that they aren't that popular here. For us frenchies, it's mainly an online phenomenon.

I also forgot to write about one noteworthy label that's based roughly 300 kilometers away from Paris called Throatruiner Records. The guy who runs it, Matthias, isn't from here but he does wonders for us. He's signed british and french bands and releases albums by himself, but he also distributes some records that we couldn't get anywhere else without paying insanely high shipping costs. The label's releases can be shipped anywhere in Europe, but are also sent to actual (small) record stores in Paris. That represents a huge amount of work for a single person, and a huge gamble because record sales are really low these days, so I have nothing but respect for the man.”

“The most active band lately has been Sociasylum that features members of previous hc/punk bands.

Hirnlos, NMR and Lahesõda haven't been very active lately. Hirnlos's vocalist Ilja went off to live in Poland for the time being, NMR's members live in different parts of Estonia right now and the guys in Lahesõda are focusing on their other band Everfade, that's metalcore.

Despite this we have had pretty good gigs during this year. In May Tragedy, then in the summer Bernays Propaganda from Macedonia and just last week Questions from Brazil and United and Strong from Germany played here.

The other good thing is that we now have our own place for gigs! ylase12 is an infoshop/social centre that holds events starting from chess nights to punk shows (: We have had some pretty good gigs there already and 2 punk movie nights. Furthermore, this place will also have different books, zines and dvd's about straight edge, hardcore etc.

Quite a lot of the information in the last entry about Estonia is outdated. I'm not sure if Follow Your Dreams studio even exists anymore, and if it does then there are no shows anymore!

Hardcore punk is not popular at all in Estonia. For example, in my hometown, Tartu, which has about 100 000 inhabitants, I know only of a couple of other people that are into the same music. It's a bit better in the capital, Tallinn, but still, you can't compare the popularity of hc punk with metalcore or punk rock.

And out of those few people that are into hc, not all are in bands. A lot of them have jobs, school and other duties like activism. Some even all of them.

As for the zines, blogs and labels, I guess when there's no strong scene or bands you don't get these kind of things. There used to be one zine from Tallinn, but it was published only in russian and had about 3 very thin issues. The only hardcore website and forum we had, closed down a few months ago because of the rare use.

Still, I wouldn't say that everything is dead right now. We still have gigs and at least one good and active band. People have different ideas about zines and blogs and hopefully something new will pop up in the near future.

One good thing about our scene is that nothing here is taken for granted. People are very respectful and helpful when they see others doing something, be it bands, zines, punk movie nights etc. It's not rare for kids to stick around after the gig and say thanks to the people who organized it and to thank the bands for visiting us."
