KROD Records

KROD Records was created in March 2015 by Jordan Calvi (owner, label manager and tour booking manager). Loic Gauthey joined this record label as a graphic designer and helped time to time in booking bands. Jordan used to organise shows in Nevers through Boi!cott Asso with Loic from 2008 to 2011.

Keine Rose ohne Dornen Records (german name) means No Rose Without a Thorn. The philosophy and how they work is summed up by the attitude that you have to work hard to get what you want even if you'll get some troubles, you have to carry on and never give it up. Jordan wants to make a music family more than a basic record label. Bands are chosen not only for their music, but also because they are human, anti racist, anti sexist, and there is a strong connection all the time. Speaking with band members at least every two weeks is important to see what to plan in the future. He also tries to work all the time with each of the bands and this makes this tiny record label stronger.

Jordan comments, 'In a record label, you produce bands you like, sometimes they are already your friends. I like pressing their vinyls and cds and see their hapiness when they get the final record in their hands. I like promoting their music on magazines and radios and get some good reviews, I like when people come at the shows or just send me message to tell me they like that band at KROD. I like this family attitude I created in this record label. I think this is my motivation to carry on working in it.'

Label - DIY Noise

"I think it's really cool that hcmorethanmusic is taking such a broad view on the hardcore music scene. Instead of focusing on your own part, focus on the greater spectrum that incompases the entire globe. A//Political would be proud.

My plans for DIY Noise are pretty simple. I can summarize it all in this one general statement. "Every band deserves a chance." That was my concept coming in to this no more than 2 months ago. And that's the way I'd like to keep it.

There are SOOOO many hardworking DIY bands that never receive recognition. Yet so many who are in it for the wrong reason who get the exact opposite. For example there was this awesome band from where I live over here in Oxnard California known as Elephant Mace. Great musicians, great live energy and just the coolest dudes you could ever talk to. These guys would organize their own shows, get touring bands from other states a place to play. They'd give other bands (like my own) a chance to play when nobody else would.

Pretty much when every little whiny scene kid was complaining about the lack of "scene" or the lack of "good" bands, these guys would essentially give them a good hard lesson about what it means to be a punk or part of a scene. These guys along with another band from here - El Mariachi - essentially set the bar on what you should do if you're in a band.

Or if you wanna start a band. Get up from your comfortable ass and fuckin DIY! No one's just gonna hand you anything (unless you got loads of cash).

I just look forward to being that helping hand that no one would be to me. To date I've done about 16 tapes, none of which I charge the bands for. This is to help bands pay for merch, tours, recordings and to give them that mental boost that keeps bands from breaking up."

Label - Tian An Men 89 Records

"Tian An Men 89 Records was created in 1993 in the purpose of releasing punk music from parts of the world where, due to financial reasons, civil wars, or lack of record factories, there is no possibility for the bands to release their music on vinyl.

We got the idea after extensive travelling and meeting great bands in various corners of the world. Our idea of punk is to accept that exist different definitions of it in different places. Punk is universal and transcends cultures. It is definitely not a sterile, narrow style, monopolized by Westerners, as some would like to believe.

We release limited editions 7" vinyl EP's (500 copies) (and 12"LPs too now) coz it seems that's been enough so far for the worldwide underground punk network which is usually more into the latest MTV cloned punk stars.

We don't care coz we know WHY we do this and that's certainly not for the money! 20% of each release pressed is sent to the bands as their share, so that records are also distributed in the country of origin. Our records (and books!) are not distributed through the commercial circuit. DIY network only. Tian An Men 89 is non-profit and fueled by passion and friendship only!

Tian An Men 89 believes individual positive actions and international solidarity can make a change towards a fairer and more beautiful world."

Label - Power Negi, UK 2

Label - Power Negi 1

"This Is Fubar: INTERVIEW. 008 - Power Negi Records.

When did you start Power Negi?

I started power negi in late 2006 when I was in grind/screamo-ish band called Moby-Dick. I made 100 hand made covers for a split with German band Ding Dong Dead; they’re now Lentic Waters. We recorded with Alex from Krupskaya - he’d be in other awesome bands like Fuck Hate Propaganda too. He sort of introduced me to DIY and from there I met loads of amazing people and found out about DIY shows and stuff. Stoke-on-Trent actually had a few things happening around the time. …Who Calls So Loud actually played a show, and Contrasto and other sick bands! The last show I remember being good was one I did - Pariso, Hang The Bastard and Maths in October 2009. From around 2006-2009 I did a few releases on vinyl, a couple of CDs and a tape and I also did a lot of shows. Power Negi has never been just a label, it’s always been about shows and distro too.

Where does the name Power Negi come from?

The name is just a joke name. Obviously this whole thing needs a name so people can find out where to buy the releases/ who to get in contact with etc. It came from the fact that at the time people were saying the word ‘negi’ a lot and thinking it was cool, I was also well into power violence which was a joke genre to start too. My friend Rory mixed the two and found it funny, so did I. The name stuck from there, it’ll do won’t it eh!

You put out releases through bands on Vinyl and on Tape. What do you think the appeal is to these formats?

I put out stuff on vinyl because it sounds better, it looks better and you get more for your money. People, listen, CDs cost a fraction of the price of wax and are shitty; you probably pay more for CDs than vinyl and you’re getting ripped off, don’t do it! I do tapes because they’re cheap as fuck, this means I can do releases I wouldn’t be able to afford usually - tape + download = cheap release, everyone is happy! Power Negi is becoming a tape only label now really because I’m so poor I can’t do anything else. I’m teaming up with Mikee and Em of Ravachol/VinoSangre to release a 2nd run of Ravachol tapes, I’m so poor now I even need help releasing tapes!

I’ll take a second here to say - anyone thinking of starting a label, do it! If you think you can’t afford to do vinyl, co-release it with another label or five other labels. Spread the cost and distribute the release further (the labels don’t have to be uk ones of course!!!) Co-releasing helps bands get heard in way more places, as does trading records with other labels. These two things are essential to DIY. It means ‘your’ bands get heard in other cities and countries and this then helps them when it comes to touring and so on. In a sense it’s an underground globalisation haha!

How do you decide what you put in your distro? Is it personal preference or what you think will sell?

The way I’ve built my distro is by trading with other labels for releases I’ve put out on Power Negi. I’ve traded with dudes from America, Malaysia, Italy, Germany, Russia, most of Europe to be honest, UK dudes of course. I’ll trade for whatever they have to offer. I’ll trade for things I’ve never heard of and things I don’t like because someone who looks through my distro may like it. The other reason of course is because by trading my releases I get bands I’ve put of distributed further, it’s all one big friendly cycle. There’s never been any genre segregation in Power Negi, I go by ethics, not genre!

How many records have you put out so far? And what new releases are coming soon/planned?

I’ve done about 18 releases so far, with 19 and 20 confirmed already. Anyone interested in what I’ve done should head over to: http://powernegi.tumblr.com/ - it has all the old releases there and what still available. Coming next I’m re-releasing the Ravachol “Great Moments in the Void” tape with new artwork, that’s a co-release with VinoSangre like I mentioned before. I’m also doing a tape for a band called Sloth from Holland, I’m really excited about that and can’t wait for people to hear them. They’re amazing people too, everyone needs to get excited!

You regularly tour with bands handling merch and selling your own distro. How do you get on these tours? Do you know all the bands prior?

Yeah, I’ve been very lucky that these bands have been so kind to have me along for the ride! I went away with Bastions in November/December last year (2010) I’ve known those dudes since the beginning, since I was in Moby-Dick, they played our last ever show and it was their 1st ever show outside the walls of Wales! I’ve watched them change as a band and the evolution has been astounding. I have so much respect for them, especially Danny Garrod and Jamie McDonald who’re the foundation stones and only original members of the band. Everyone needs to be on pins awaiting the new record, it’s going to be one of the best full lengths out of the UK in a while! I’ve tour with them a few times now, they’ve stopped taking me cause I drink all their beer!

I also toured with Kasa and The Long Haul in April this year, I’ve known Kasa since they started too, again putting them on in Stoke-on-Trent on their 1st UK tour, 1st date I think too. We ate oatcakes (local Stoke thing…) watched tim + eric and I gained the nick-name Spaggett… I quit my job to tour with those dudes and it was the best decision of my life so far TOURING > ANYTHING. Alex Pennie was driving on this tour, Goodtime Boys vocalist, so I was stoked when I found out they were touring with Bastions a few weeks after the Kasa tour. I had no job or anything to do so I went on that too!

So, to answer your question, yes I know most of the bands prior and they’ve all been more than kind to me. I love all these dudes for taking me places: Bastions, Kasa, Goodtime boys, The Long Haul, Jackals, Julith Krishun, and The Mire.

What's next for Power Negi? Will you be going on any upcoming tours?

I’m actually starting a degree at Nottingham Trent university doing fine art for 3 years. I’ll be starting a band or two so hopefully I’ll be going on tours in bands I’m actually in! I’m doing those tapes I said about and I’ll be building the distro up again because it’s running low now. I’ll be doing some shows with some rad dudes I met from Nottingham too, so anyone needing a show should get in touch, I can’t guarantee anything but I can try."

Label - Holy Roar Records

Interview with co-founder Alex re-blogged from Stay Ahead

"Can you tell me a bit about how the label begun and how you decided on the direction you wanted to go?

The idea for the label was sown when me and Ellen lived in Birmingham. I formed a label with a couple of friends in Birmingham based around a webzine and we did 3 releases. Me and Ellen then moved to London and decided there was a bunch of bands we wanted to see pushed more in the UK! The first release came out around June/July 2006. As for deciding on a direction - well, essentially, this never happened! We just did, and always have, released exactly what we want. Anything we like that isn't cheesy is certainly up for consideration. We certainly never sat down and went 'lets release whatever is in fashion in the metal world and try and clean up on merch' or anything like that - a look at our catalogue should hopefully reveal that we always have, and always will support some bands that have no commercial prospects at all.

How has it been for you to see the label grow?

Amazing. The most satisfying feeling in the world. But it has certainly been very hard work - far more work than monetary return that is for sure! Which is sometimes hard to swallow when you do it full time, but I cant complain as it is better than working in a soulless office with personality-void drones.

You're the label that brought bands like Gallows, Rolo Tomassi to people's attention. What helps you decide on bands to work with?

I'm sure there are cynical people who think we released those bands to a) make money b) increase our profile, but that has never been the case. Rolo Tomassi we have been with since the start, and every other 'name' band we have worked with has come about organically through real friendships or mutual respect. Generally we just go with gut feeling on who to work with - sometimes we get it wrong, and sometimes with hindsight I'm like 'why did we do that?' - but if we ever got more calculated than that then I would hate myself. All we ask of our bands is that they be fucking amazing and work hard. Not much! Ha.

Do you still take pride in the DIY formula that the UK underground scene stands by?

I'm not sure to be honest. I've felt really burnt by a couple of situations recently that have left me more disillusioned with the complete lack of intelligence and logical thought of a bunch of people. But DIY to me is a personal thing - it stands for 'do it yourself' after all, and we certainly do EVERYTHING to do with Holy Roar ourselves. There is no outside funding, there is no one promoting our bands except us and fans!

What does the future hold for the label?

I'm determined not to becoming a merch company. I want to continue to release a lot of music and continue to try and push our music into new physical territories across the world. The future is trying to strengthen our position whilst remaining 100% independent, making ourselves better known around the world and releasing loads of good music!"

Straight from Lublin Last Warning is a old school hardcore label created with a lot of heart, faith and courage to support our local scene. Labels - Désordre Ordonne/L'oeil du Tigre

Anyway, as you probably know, where's that deerhead? is dead now. The label has existed for 5 years and we released 13 cassettes...

I'm now involved in two new projects that take almost all my time :

Désordre Ordonne
It's a new complete DIY cassette label, just like where's that deerhead, the only difference is that i'm running it alone
...I have 3 releases already and some more planned for soon.

L'oeil du Tigre
It's a collective regrouping where's that deerhead, Désordre Ordonne and Mon oeil. We are 4 friends running it, we organise shows, releases CDs and vinyl and have lots of fun ! We released a Kraken LP this week that is now available on our website.

Stay curious !

Label - Obi Wahn

Obi Wahn simply started after the demise of my old label yehonala tapes ... it was called peace tree tapes before that and had around 5 releases out ... it was started to put out the first henry fonda releases as i didn't want to release them through yehonala ...

It's mostly short run stuff and i don't release bands that i dont know in real life ... i don't do trades and mailorder because its simply a pain in the ass after a while ... so everything happens only in real life ... i mostly trade and sell those tapes on tour ... this was started in 2009 or 2008 i guess ... i can't remember ...

So far i have put out releases from these bands and they are are all sold out ...

Label - ZX Tapes

ZX Tapes started up as a smaller outlet for small bands, artists from all genres of music. So i asked around a few local forums for people to donate their old tapes they had in their attics or basements so i could recycle them and put some great tunes out on. And from there the recycled ethos continued through the packaging, using anything i had around my flat for packaging like cans of beans, bubble wrap, foam wrap from a 4-track i got off Ebay and even some sticks i got from the park.

Previous releases have ranged from drone/noise/hardcore/powerviolence/improv music, again putting out really awesome bands and people that have a love and passion of the music they do and for music in general.

At present not much is going on as my tape player broke! So while i get a new one i am taking a break. :)

Coming up next is a Laptop release for a noise guy called Narshe. It will be two of my old smahed up laptops that don't work and sprayed up with a Narshe logo on them. There will also be 25 tapes in a black sprayed, sealed cd wallet.

The future will consist of more tapes in odd packages, trying to keep a bit of fun into life! My tapes aren't always hugely polished or refined but at the end of the day it's all about whats on the tape.
