About hardcore ideals

In general, it doesn't work out.

Straight edge as a lifestyle is supported only by straight edge warriors and some of the Punkportál people, if we take sXe as a philosophy it leaves only that few Punkportál guys. Sellout problems do not occur, because even the biggest bands cannot make a profit. Political views that are connected to hardcore are not shared by the majority of the scene and are rarely spoken of (again, Punkportál bunch is the exception. Also former Newborn and now Bridge to Solace frontman Zoltán Jakab does a small amount of speaking here and there). Militant attitude is a constant problem, the hardcore warrior machismo also causes homophobia, which is a very sad thing.



Venues

Hardcore / punk had its focal venues since the eighties, but the most of them has been lost since. Rocktogon, After Music Club, Pogo Loco, Tűzraktér, Vörös Yuk and Kék Yuk are the places for smaller bands, bigger ones play at Dürer kert, the ship A38 and Petőfi Csarnok. Most of these are not in downtown. In the early '00s, two big venues, Süss Fel Nap and Kultiplex were in the downtown, but the first one was bought up and made into a shit party place for frat boys and chicks. Kultiplex was owned and bulldozed down by the local districts government in a complex business transaction under a strong suspicion of corruption. Fuck' em.



History

Hungarian hardcore came in 3 waves.

1st wave (1985 – early nineties)

Punk band Marina Revue (live in 1985) was the first Hungarian band calling themselves hardcore in 1985, even if they held few similarities with American hardcore. Their definitive guitarist later played in Tizedes meg a többiek and provided a somewhat alike sound.


The hardcore scene expanded, fed by these bands legacy and the constant input from the American hardcore evolution neared the Hungarian bands a bit more to their American counterparts. AMD and Leukémia are the most important bands from that era.



2nd wave (the nineties)

In this era the hardcore scene separated from overall punk, became small and separated, but started to resemble international hardcore, in terms of music and fashion. They felt more close to the international hardcore scene than the Hungarian underground and this resulted in lacking musical output, until Dawncore and Newborn, from which the latter redefined the European hardcore sound with their 1999 In these desperate days… EP with incorporating Göteborg metal elements into a truly hardcore sound.



3rd wave (the 00s)

With only a few bands still standing from the 2nd wave and Newborn offshoots The Idoru (from melodic hardcore to alternative rock) and Bridge to Solace (from metallic hardcore to metalcore) slowly leaving the territory of hardcore, the decisive dynamics came from outside of the hardcore scene.



Around 2000 the people who I call Punkportál group could deeply explore hardcore music and ideals, through the early World Wide Web. Lots of bands started to incorporate elements of hardcore in their music, most notably Redlineoffside (from California punk and a saxophone to Kid Dynamite), Semmi Komoly (from ska-punk to melodic hardcore) and Nesze (from three chords to Good Riddance).





In a few years the very same scene produced two by definiton hardcore bands, Something Against You and New Dead Project.
